Eric Byler’s new film “American Knees”

CVK
eric bylerDirector Eric Byler, best known for his critically acclaimed indie romance Charlotte Sometimes, will begin shooting his next project at the end of this month, and there are some big names in the cast:

Hi, I’m shooting a film called American Knees that starts March 21. Cast includes Chris Tashima (Oscar winner for Visas and Virtue), Joan Chen (The Last Emperor, Twin Peaks), Kelly Hu (X-2, Cradle to the Grave), Michael Paul Chan (The Joy Luck Club), Sab Shimono (Robot Stories, The Big Hit), and Ben Shenkman (Pi, Personal Velocity, Angels in America). It’s produced by Lisa Onodera (Picture Bride, The Debut), directed by me (charlotte sometimes, TRE), and based on a well-known Asian American novel by Shawn Wong.

    Hey Eric,

I was a background extra with some friends on American Knees. Best of luck with the film!

American Knees was a pivotal book in the development of my relationships with Asian American men… not that I agreed with all the ideas in the book. It’s also one of the best romanctic storylines that happen to be about two Asian Americans. The best romances never follow a straight line… from point A to point B ending at point C. Being confused, breaking up, trying to figure it all out, dating/sleeping with other people, than coming back is all good. In other words, a good relationship is when both people go through a process in order to realize that they want to be with each other.

Is Shawn Wong involved with the film project American Knees?

Hi Terry. Thanks for helping us out. Which background extra are you in what scenes? Picture edit is nearly done. I hope you’re in it.

I wrote that blurb at the top when we were looking for background extras and for locations. We ended up getting just barely what we needed in both departments.

Shawn Wong is an associate producer. He visited the set for a day or two. He did not participate in the screen adaptation, but I did have a lunch with him years back, and he read narration in the first ever table read (when you get actors to read the script out loud to see how it plays). He recently saw a rough cut and said he was very pleased with the film.

    Hi Eric,
I met you at the Cinema Village premier of Charlotte Sometimes a couple of years ago. So happy to hear you have another film coming out. I read American Knees and I’m looking forward to your adaption. I’m sorry I missed you and Shawn Wong at the NYAAFF. Keep up the great work and as always I wish you much success. And You were right about the San Francisco Asian American Film Festival it is the best!!!! I’m hoping to make my third pilgrimage there next March…
