Musings on multiracial casting in Sideways, Constantine

keanu reeves Sort of not very timely now, but I noticed that Sandra Oh’s character in Sideways had a biracial daughter. We first see her in photographs on the fridge, where she looks black and Asian American, but when she appears in the flesh for the first time, a different girl portrays her. The actress appears phenotypically African American. Bit of a disppointment that they didn’t carry through with mixed casting, but I was happy to see that they went with multiracial casting at all (including having Oh’s character be non-white). Of course, this may be due to the book, which I didn’t read. Even then, it’s good that they kept the diversity in the leap to the big screen.

Just saw Constantine last night, starring my favorite mixed actor, Keanu Reeves. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they used what looked like mixed actors to portray his character as a child and as a teen. The younger one, about 10-12 years old, looks white and Asian, while the older one could be the same or Latino. I think it’s the first time that’s been done with his character. Usually they use white actors for his younger selves. I thought the movie was quite good too, btw.
