WARD WATCH: 70% of funding for MCRI comes from Ward

Despite attempts by the misleadingly titled Michigan Civil Rights Initiative to claim that they have widespread financial support from Michigan residents, it turns out that over 70% of their funding comes from Ward “Moneybags” Connerly. Detroit Free Press reports that “according to campaign finance reports filed Monday, the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative received $500,693 from a committee headed and largely funded by Connerly, according to the reports. MCRI raised over $700,000 last year, most of the rest coming from small individual donors, and used the money to collect petition signatures. ”
The so-called Michigan Civil Rights Initiative is an attempt by Ward and his cohorts to ban affirmative action in Michigan when it comes to public hiring and contracting, and university admissions. Despite the fact that almost ALL their funding comes from Ward, MCRI is still trying to claim they have grassroots support in Michigan:
MCRI spokesman Chetly Zarko said the campaign overall had received more than 1,400 individual donations, and that more than half of them came from Michiganders.
“We relied on Ward for a lot of help,” Zarko said. “But hundreds of people from Michigan also had the courage to contribute. Our opposition consistently says there are no grassroots in this campaign. We’ve laid that to rest.”
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight…..
