Florida’s Sun-Sentinel’s Celebrity Q&A column profiles Naveen Andrews, the actor who plays an Iraqi ex-soldier on ABC’s hit series “Lost.”
There’s something familiar about the actor who plays an ex-Iraqi army officer on ABC’s Lost. Where have I seen him before?
Biracial actor Naveen Andrews has appeared in some 20 movies and television shows, but his most widely seen role was in the 1996 Oscar winner The English Patient, in which he played the turbaned WWII bomb-disposal expert who romances French star Juliette Binoche. Born in London, the son of an English businessman and an Indian psychologist, Andrews originally planned to become a musician — he is a skilled guitarist — but switched to acting after attending drama school with Ewan McGregor.
Off-screen, the 36-year-old actor seems to have a thing for older women. He moved in with his math teacher while still in high school and had a son by her, now aged 12. The couple split after five years, and Andrews has since become the lover of 56-year-old Barbara Hershey, best remembered for her role as Bette Midler’s ill-fated friend in Beaches and for her tempestuous affair with Kung Fu star David Carradine in the ’70s.
